The z=5.8 Quasar SDSSp J1044-0125: A Peek at Quasar Evolution?
نویسنده
چکیده
The newly discovered z=5.8 quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 was recently detected in X-rays and found to be extremely X-ray weak. Here we present the hardness ratio analysis of the XMM-Newton observation. We consider various models to explain the detection in the soft X-ray band and non-detection in the hard band, together with its X-ray weakness. We show that the source may have a steep power-law slope, with an absorber partially covering the continuum. This may be X-ray evidence to support the argument of Mathur (2000) that narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies, which show steep power-law slopes, might be the low redshift, low luminosity analogues of the high redshift quasars. Heavily shrouded and steep X-ray spectrum quasars may indeed represent the early stages of quasar evolution (Mathur 2000, Fabian 1999) and SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 is possibly giving us a first glimpse of the physical evolution of quasar properties. 6 − 5 ) Observations of the Quasar SDSS 1044 − 0125 at z = 5 . 8
We present a result of the quasar CO(J = 6− 5) observations of SDSSp J104433.04−012502.2 at z = 5.8. Ten-days observations with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array yielded an rms noise level of ∼ 2.1 mJy beam in a frequency range from 101.28 GHz to 101.99 GHz at a velocity resolution of 120 km s. No significant clear emission line was detected in the observed field and frequency range. Three sigma up...

We report upper limits on CO J=2–1 and CO J=5–4 emission from the quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 at z = 5.73 from observations made with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland-Association Array. Previously reported limits on CO J=6–5 emission (Iwata et al. 2001) were obtained at z = 5.80, which is now thought to be off by 1%, and the observations likely missed the relevant redshifts for molecular gas...
متن کاملWhat Is the Highest Plausible Redshift of Luminous Quasars?
The recent discoveries of luminous quasars at high redshifts imply that black holes more massive than a few billion solar masses have been assembled already when the universe was less than a billion years old. We show that the existence of these black holes is not surprising in popular hierarchical models of structure formation. For example, the black hole needed to power the quasar SDSS 1044-0...
متن کاملReionization Bias in High Redshift Quasar Near-Zones
Absorption spectra of high redshift quasars exhibit an increasingly thick Lyα forest, suggesting the fraction of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is increasing towards z ∼ 6. However, the interpretation of these spectra is complicated by the fact that the Lyα optical depth is already large for neutral hydrogen fractions in excess of 10, and also because quasars are expected to...

We report on an XMM-Newton observation of the most distant known quasar, SDSSp J104433.04–012502.2, at z = 5.80. We have detected this quasar with high significance in the rest-frame 3.4–13.6 keV band, making it the most distant cosmic object detected in X-rays; 32± 9 counts were collected. SDSSp J104433.04–012502.2 is notably X-ray weak relative to other luminous, optically selected quasars, w...
